Tryon Creek Orphan
Portland, Oregon

Originally planted by "Wendy" on 7/11/99, when she came up from California to have lunch with Der Mad Stamper and then go letterboxing in the afternoon. Since the clues seem to have gone missing, this box was adopted by Der Mad Stamper in 2004.

CLUES:
(Terrain: Hilly but Easy - Clues: Easy)

Find your way to the Tryon Creek State Natural Area (off I-5, Terwilliger Blvd, SW Portland) and pick up a map at the visitor center.

Using the map, find the Lewis & Clark Trail and take it to the Terry Riley Bridge. Continue North from the bridge on the Lewis & Clark Trail.

On the way, you will see...

  • On the West side of the trail, an unwilling Arbor
  • A fallen tree caught by two others
  • A stream bed forged with gravel, steps going in and steps going out

From the stream bed, turn South (back-track) 10 paces, look for 3 trees all growing from one... The middle one hollow, the other two young. This is where you will find the letterbox.

(If you get to the North Horse Loop access trail, you have gone too far!)

Notes from Wendy:

1999: This is an "orphan letterbox" because I don't live in the area, so I cannot check on it. Please help me to keep this letterbox in good shape. Thanks!

2001: This letterbox sat dormant for 2 years until I finally posted the clues. Thank you to David and Ryan for checking this letterbox for me and giving me suggestions for editing the clues. Thanks especially to David for taking digital shots of the area so I can see how things had changed after 2 years.
