The Spirit of Dartmoor Letterbox
Portland, Oregon

Placed by Der Mad Stamper on April 27, 2001.

This letterbox is dedicated to Don Y. who was an
avid fan of British cryptic crossword puzzles.
He helped plan this letterbox and wrote its clues.

Don's little puzzle segment (below) is intended to give you a taste of what it's like to work on a British-style cryptic crossword puzzle. Because I'm such a nice guy, I've even filled in the first answer for you! You can thank me later...

The answers to the puzzle also reveal the secret location of this historic landmark letterbox, which is the oldest letterbox of its kind in America. Simply inquire within to discover how aptly named the box really is. Please show your appreciation by making a purchase while you're there. Enjoy!

UPDATE - March, 2012: In Don's memory, I decided to give this classic letterbox a makeover—including a more attractive container and a newly-carved rubber stamp. I also left behind another little surprise, but you'll have to go see it for yourself. Even if you've visited this box before, I highly recommend a return visit! Please tip your server well.—DMS
